My Teaching Style

I believe in classrooms that develop into communities and I believe some of the most effective tools that can be used in the pursuit of that goal are humour and personality.  A classroom where teachers and students embrace their individual styles, needs and quirks is an effective learning space.  My students get to know me, and I them, as we explore the content together.  I have significant experience of teaching and training teachers at the high school level, and this background has helped shape the way I understand the role of an educator, and the most useful paths to achieve sustainable learning. I try to create a relaxed environment in a classroom and by combining the natural authority of demonstrable expertise with mutual respect, space for healthy collective failure, and a little stereotypically British self effacing humour. I employ an active learning pedagogy based on principles of productive groupwork, spaced repetition and continual critical engagement.
